  • 1.  Ambulatory Care Nursing Curriculum

    Posted 01-23-2023 16:13
    Hello,
    I am in the process of creating an ambulatory care nursing curriculum to prepare our students for senior preceptorship clinical in an ambulatory care setting. Through my research and reviewing the AAACN Core Curriculum it is overwhelming. Therefore, I would appreciate your suggestions on the top 5-10 topics that should be covered to make sure our students are prepared. Throughout our program, we cover the following topics;
    Office Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT Nursing),chronic and acute disease management, Patient centered care, health promotion, episodic care, case management, preventing hospital readmissions, health equity and diversity, telehealth nursing, the RN role, nurse sensitive indicators, advocacy, care coordination and transitional care, and population health.
    I appreciate any suggestions as I want to make sure we are providing comprehensive lesson plans.

    Thank you,
    Mary

    Look at training you need to do to meet regulatory requirements and remember to include in your curriculum. For example, in NY we need to provide annual IV education to LPNs and Coumadin education to RNs. Include cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of instruments. Bloodborne pathogen exposure prevention, preceptor training

    Hi Mary,
    It is great to hear of efforts to include ambulatory care nursing into undergraduate curriculum!  You have already assembled quite a list here
    Here are a few additional suggestions:
    • team-based care, scope of practice, delegation
    • assessment of social determinants of health and connecting patients to community resources
    • additional mental health content
    • effective patient engagement techniquest, such as motivational interviewing
    • assessment in many virtual and face to face modalities
    • ages and stages of care - prenatal all the way to geriatric
    • evidence-based practice, quality improvement/reseearch
    I know this adds to your already exhaustive list, hopefully many of these are already incorporated into your basic curriculum.
