    Hi-

Wondering if anyone has an evidence-based tool for asynchronous triage.  We use the Schmitt-Thompson nurse triage protocols embedded within Epic for telephone calls.  Many pts do not want phone calls anymore, they want to communicate through My Chart messaging, and we receive a lot of symptoms based My Chart messages.  Our current practice is to call the pt for further triage but wondering if there is an evidence-based tool that could be used through messaging to triage the pt. Alternatively do you have a workflow or protocol you use for this type triage?

    Best,

    Pam

    Hi Pamela,

I work at The University of Kansas Health System, and we also use Schmitt-Thompson within EPIC. We, too, have similar struggles with patients wanting acute advice over my chart and we do try to connect with them via phone majority of the time. Our teams also access the protocols outside of the telephone encounter. Does your team also do that? That is the only other workflow we use, especially when parents are wanting homecare advice for kiddos.

Happy to chat more if you want to email me- mleach@kumc.edu.

    Thanks!

    Mallory

    Hi Pam,

I work in telephone triage San Antonio Texas, we too use EPIC and their protocols.

When receiving a question for nurse advice we call our patients back and triage accordingly no other protocols.

    Thanks,

    Susan

    Hi Pamela-

We just met with EPIC a couple weeks ago and discussed implementing the MyChart Symptom Checker. Epic Showroom <--This link tells you more about it. It allows patients to utilize a symptom checker within the MyChart mobile app or website. It was developed by Dr. Barton Schmitt, same person who authored the protocols. Based on the patients answers it will then connect them to the right facility, service or provider within your organization. This will significantly cut down on the number of messages our nursing team is having to handle.
