  • 1.  Billing for AWV under Medicare Part B

    Good morning-

    I am reaching out to see how you interpret "directly supervised by a physician" when a qualified non-physician practitioner (PA, APRN) or medical professionals (health educator, RN) perform an AWV.

    Our organization is interpreting "directly supervised by a physician" to mean that "the provider is readily available and not doing another billable task (i.e. seeing a different patient)".
    interested in your thoughts!

    Hello,
    APPs can bill CMS directly for AWV.  RNs need "direct supervision" but at least in my experience, that is more readily available in case of an issue.  The physicians/APPs continue their visits but in the unlikely event something would happen, they could step out.  The direct supervision is merely a billing requirement as the AWV is well within the RN scope.

    Hello,


    In total agreement with Stephanie.

    The provider may be performing other tasks and must be immediately available for consultation, even by telephone or telehealth. 

    We bill under the provider's name and have achieved 100% reimbursement success with the annual and subsequent AWVs.

    Note: RNs may not independently complete the initial or Welcome to Medicare AWV. They may provide support, of course.
