  • 1.  Fall Prevention in The Ambulatory Setting

    Posted 01-19-2024 16:20

Hello, I am a clinical educator for a very large ambulatory system. We need to standardize education and training across our 600+ care sites within 52 counties regarding Safe Patient Handling and Fall Prevention. We are working on prevention tools & strategies to prevent patient, visitor, and staff falls and injuries.

Has anyone implemented any fall prevention strategies within their ambulatory system? What worked and what didn't?

Does anyone have a policy related to assisting patients to/from their car from their appointment or throughout the office?

Are your Ambulatory staff trained in safe-patient handling methods and assistive devices?

What is your policy if a mobility impaired patient does not have a caregiver or someone to help them with mobility?

Any insight or direction is appreciated!

    Thanks,

I've done work in this space. Here are a few publications that might help. I'm also presenting on this topic at conference this year. Happy to connect and talk in person if you're attending. I'd also recommend looking at the US Preventive Service Task Force recommendations on fall prevention and CDC STEADI resources.  If you have access to a librarian they may be able to help pull additional resources to help develop a plan.

    Brandi,

Thank you for bringing these topics to the forefront!

The Fall Prevention and safe patient handling in Ambulatory settings is a concern for our patients as well as. the safety of staff members. Our org. does not have a policy or consistent education pathway for falls in the out -patient setting. Guidance for the various out-patient sites would be welcome. I would be interested in joining team members to create a guide on Fall risk, and help staff recognize SPH techniques.

I will not be at the conference. Will your presentation be recorded for the community?

    Best,

    Brandi,

I appreciate your concern and empathy for your patients, but please check with legal and your office or facility risk management (insurance policy) to see whether your staff are covered outside the office doors.

Why? This is in regard to stretching your liability risk from the office to the transport vehicle. In addition,  is  any outside assistance covered by the 'Good Samaritan' law. If the latter is the case, are any of the staff in a union? This type of policy change would trigger an adjustment in their contract.  If staff are limited to Good Samaritan coverage, they would not be eligible for any workplace injury outside of the office doors.

Thank you for that insight, Aleesa. We are working alongside our system risk management team on this topic.

All are invited to take advantage of a self-directed, online, accredited module we created for ambulatory care teams on the subject of Fall Risk Screening, Assessment and Care Planning. It has been renewed for another 2 years and there is no cost. See attached pdf for details.
