On behalf of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) Advocacy Committee, we wish you peace and health in the coming year.
As we gear up for 2025, I encourage your continued support and advocacy for vital initiatives such as "Nursing is STEM" https://www.nursingisstem.org/home to help grow funding for a diverse nursing workforce. Below are a few things you can do before the end of the year to support this initiative:
    1. The AAACN has signed on as an organization but you can sign on as an individual and forward this update to your nursing colleagues, faculty/educators, community groups, and boards to encourage them to review and sign the petition if they haven't done so yet https://www.nursingisstem.org/join-our-coalition
    2. Nursing is STEM was nominated as a Finalist in the Nurse Community Initiative Category Voting is open until 12/31/24, so don't miss your chance to cast your vote!
    3. Take the opportunity to speak up in your local community, participate in podcasts, meet with your local state or federal representatives, write letters to the editor in your local newspaper, post blogs and other publications and tag #NursingIsSTEM
By designating Nursing as STEM, hundreds of millions of dollars can be unlocked for Americans to pursue Nursing as a career.

    Respectfully,
Leondra Weiss, AAACN Advocacy Chair, MN, ARNP, FNP-BC, C-EFM, AMB-BC

I am so on board with this! In fact, I would like to ask AAACN to collaborate on drafting the Future of Nursing 2030-2040 report, which will focus on designating Nursing as a STEM profession and aggressively lobbying institutions to adopt a more scientific curriculum, including incorporating courses on AI and machine learning, computer science, and other vital STEM courses such as chemistry, physics, statistics, pathophysiology, and advanced anatomy/physiology. There is no reason why nurses can't adopt a pre-med curriculum as part of their BSN.

Yes! This is an exciting next step for our profession! We need to own our practice which means speaking in discrete, specific ways to "how" our practice contributes to patient care and to the organizations who employ us.  We "have" a solid educational foundation using all the sciences. Nursing is a science! I see this advocacy as yet another avenue to align ourselves where we should have been all along. So proud of AAACN nurse leaders and members for pushing us forward!!

This is very exciting; I fully support this. But...let's not lose sight of the nursing questions that cannot be answered through science. There are philosophical questions that exist alongside of the science; nursing questions that cannot be answered by science alone. We have worked hard to divest ourselves of the "medical model" that positioned nursing as the handmaiden to physicians. It would be important to me as we pursue STEM to ensure we don't leave philosophic inquiry behind. What is the nature of nursing? What is the nature of the nurse-patient relationship? These are philosophical questions that will become even more important to us as we expand the universe of Telehealth Nursing and seek to understand the depth of the relationship with our patient in a virtual environment.

Thank you so much for posting this. I immediately signed up for the coalition.  When I started nursing in the 70's it was considered one of the two career paths for women: the science (nursing) versus education (teaching) profession. Unfortunately , I have seen those with EdD degrees take over the profession and follow the Case Western University competition on nursing theories to dilute the focus, rather than grow the profession in accordance with progressive changes in society.  I whole-heartedly see my profession as grounded in the science that provided ample background for a research doctorate. Feel free to contact make contact, if you believe I may be of assistance.
