  • 1.  Patient Oxygen Use

    Hello!

We are reviewing our process for patients presenting on home oxygen, who need to use oxygen from our institution when they come in for an appointment (e.g., tank is running low, etc). Wondering if anyone has a process developed that you could share?

    Thanks!

    Emily

we have O2 tanks in the clinic but encourage patients to use their own.  they will not bring theirs or tell us they are almost out or need theirs and want to use ours.  We have it available but do not encourage our usage or offer it to patients.

When I was in the clinic setting, we encouraged staff to routinely offer our oxygen to patients who came in on home oxygen. Many of our specialty clinic patients were driving long distances to reach us and we worried about them running out, especially if they were likely to hit rush hour on their way home.

We do not have an official policy, more like an understanding, but we use our partial tanks left in clinic for patients to use.  Our healthcare tech created a partial/in use cabinet and a full tank cabinet to keep them separate.

    Hi everyone.

I'm also reviewing the process and have been tasked with writing a policy about it. I'm curious - does anyone get a physician order prior to switching patients from home oxygen to clinic supplied oxygen? Or do you verify that a patient has an order for home oxygen?

    Thank you!

No provider orders but we do verify they do have a home O2 consult

Same with our clinics. No order but confirm home 02 order/consult.

    Hi Emily!

If a patient is coming to our facility with their home oxygen:

    1) Patient can continue to use their home 02 supply

    OR

    2) Once they check in to their appointment, Nursing can order supplemental oxygen as an "order by policy" and update clinic charge ticket for oxygen therapy. The patient will either be given a portable 02 tank OR we will use the oxygen concentrator in the clinic (some of our clinics have this).

    Happy to further discuss!
