  • 1.  Please help a girl out- Blood and Body Fluid Spill Management Protocol??

    Posted 3 days ago

    Hello Team,

I'm praying I don't have to reinvent this wheel. I'm new to this position and getting weary of creating so many workflows. We didn't have a spill kit in my clinics (we do now) and now I'm realizing (don't tell OSHA) we don't have an existing Blood and Body Fluid Spill Management Protocol. Please tell me someone has one they'd be willing to share. Then I can just link the spill kit items as an attachment.

    Hi Cortney,

Our organization has system policy that we utilize. I can share our procedure:

    1. Whoever discovers the spill should immediately place a wet floor sign.
      2. Retrieve a spill kit for immediate removal of the spill.
      3. In all areas, area staff will utilize the approved spill kit to quickly cover the spill with the solidifier
product provided within the spill kits as well as to follow the instructions outlined within the kit for the solidifier
      application and disposal.
      a. Linens should not be used to clean up spills.
      b. Approved disposal absorbent pads or absorbent strips (dams) must be used.
      4. EVS will be contacted for the final cleaning and disinfecting of the area(s) involved.
      5. Assemble equipment needed to perform specific service.
      6. Perform hand hygiene and don gloves.  Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene frequently (between patients
bed(s), restrooms, and exiting rooms) and if otherwise visibly soiled, to avoid cross-contamination when
      performing cleaning and disinfecting service.
      7. Don additional PPE as needed, goggles, gowns, etc.
      8. Above the floor-utilize approved disinfectant disposable wipe for above the floor cleaning as indicated
(ensure proper manufacturer recommended dwell [wet contact] time).
      9. Hard surface flooring (Place wet floor sign and take down when area has dried)- utilize approved wet
mopping hard surface product on a disposable mop pad for hard surface flooring wet mopping as indicated
(ensure proper manufacturer recommended dwell or wet contact time).
      10. Carpet or fabric: (Place wet floor sign and take down when area has dried)- utilize approved
carpet/upholstery approved product as indicated (ensure proper manufacturer recommended dwell or wet
      contact time).
      11. Clean and store equipment in a neat, orderly fashion.
      12. Remove gloves and other PPE and dispose of them in correct waste receptacle.
      13. Perform hand hygiene

    Hope this is helpful
