Required qualifications for nursing assistants in clinics and essential job duties

  • 1.  Required qualifications for nursing assistants in clinics and essential job duties

    Posted 02-27-2023 17:12

    In 2020, MU Health Care added a Care Team Associate-Ambulatory (CTA-A)position to supplement our staffing options in our clinics. We modeled it after the Care Team Associate-Clinical (CTA-C) position that supports our inpatient nursing staff.

    We now have CTA-A as the entry level clinical position, Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs), LPNs, and RNs in the clinics.

    We are finding that our requirements for the position are eliminating interested candidates who do not meet the required qualifications. The primary qualifications are:

    • Certified Nursing Assistant certification (CNA); or
    • Completion of a Fundamental of Nursing course; or
    • Completion of Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) training in the last 3 years

    If you are using unlicensed staff in addition to CMAs, please respond to the following questions:

    • What are your requirements for the position?
    • Are you able to provide on the job training or do you have to meet hospital or state requirements for this position?
    • What are the essential duties that you have these staff perform?

    Our essential duties include:

    •  Confirm the purpose for each visit, verify patient information by interviewing
      the patients, reviewing, and/or recording medical history, completing the clinic
      visit form, taking vital signs and documenting this information in Electronic
      Medical Record (EMR).
    • Prepare patients for the health care visit by providing examination gowns and
      drapes; positioning patients for examination and/or treatment; arranging
      examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
    • Demonstrate the ability to organize workload and manage multiple tasks. Prompt
      responsiveness to patient needs and delivery of messages to care team.
      Support care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations;
      preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on specimens;
      disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; preparing
      patients for x-rays; taking electrocardiograms; performing simple changing dressings, remove IVs,
      point of care glucose testing, may perform venipuncture to obtain a blood
      sample, and maintain quality control checks.
    • Maintain stock levels and order clinic supplies; keep equipment operating by
      following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining
      supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
    • May complete other unit/department specific duties and expectations as outlined in
      department competencies

    Thank you in advance for your responses to qualifications for the role and essential duties.
