I would tend to agree that some Inpatient care, ED, or Home Health Experience is helpful prior to working ambulatory nursing as Karen mentioned, it teaches the nurse Critical Thinking skills and provides varied experiences that are helpful to be aware of prior to joining an ambulatory practice. Having a brand new RN just out of school is not a bad thing in a larger practice that may have other RN's to teach her things or if the provider is an excellent teacher that also helps a lot. However, if you have a brand new RN in a small practice where the provider does not help much, that provides its challenges and may cause issues related to "you don't know what you don't know".
