  • 1.  Role under consideration

    Posted 06-02-2022 08:28
    Hello,
I am re-posting this question to see if anyone else has feedback.  Our system is considering implementation of an RN role that would be to coordinate orientations of multiple staff, assist with implementation of new processes, provide information and increase the visibility of quality measures, and support quality improvement projects.  This would be a rotational role for an RN in the Clinic.  We did a literature search and found only a couple of examples of implementation of a role like this and are wondering if anyone else has ideas.
    Thank you,
    Stephanie Witwer

Hi Stephanie. We have a role that is similar to what you are describing. The focus is of this role is on education, training, and quality/safety.  The nurses cover up to 6 practices within a 20 mile radius. We look at number of providers and staff members for each practice to determine how many practices they can adequately cover.  I have attached the role summary for your review.

    Hi Stephanie,

I have worked with primary clinics and other ambulatory clinics for the past 15 years as a clinical director and as an independent consultant for clinics but have not seen a role similar to what you are describing. A job description could potentially be created to reflect your specific needs. As I read what you have described, this RN role seems to include several different responsibilities that you may want to connect and streamline. The number of staff requiring orientation and the extent of the quality initiatives could be evaluated to decide as to how to utilize this RN role. Rotating this role may cause inconsistency with the orientation and quality improvement projects would be difficult to manage. Wishing you the best as this transitions into a positive role for you and the clinics.

    Hi Stephanie,
We have our education department complete all staff onboarding and any educational components of new training/equipment. Clinic orientation is completed usually by the Lead MA or RN if an RN position. We have recently renamed our clinical supervisors to a Clinical Improvement Specialist, working within service lines to help improve implementation of new processes, and be the boots on the ground to improve measures as you have outlined.

    Hi Stephanie
I started in the role you are describing about 5 years ago here at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (formerly Seattle Cancer Care Alliance).  I am part of a team of Professional Practice Coordinators that work at the institution working together with nursing education and clinical leadership to assist with nurse onboarding, clinical competencies, role out of new processes, development of patient education materials, and other special projects. I did a poster for ONS Congress a few years ago and will attach here.  Happy to answer questions if you want to connect.

    Stephanie,
If you didn't find it already, you might want to look at the article by Quanna Batiste (2018, I think) in ViewPoint. She describes something similar to this although it was a permanent position in her organization, not a rotation.

In my previous role as a clinic educator, the educators functioned very similarly to what you are describing. We did about half education (including orientation) and half everything else on your list.

Good luck with your project. I'd love to hear how it turns out!
