I'm curious about this as well. I'd love to see how others are determining the ratio of nursing support needed per specialty. Is patient acuity/complexity being considered in a standardized way? Or, are most areas using provider FTE or patient volumes to determine RN support?

I work for an FQHC. We use the FTE model to determine staffing ratios.

The FTE model is a methos used to compare workload based on the number for full-time equivalent employees need to complete it.  It is very useful when you have a mix of full-time and part-time employees.  For example, in our clinic a full-time Primary Care PCP equals 1 FTE, where a full-time Psych APRN equals 0.5 FTE.  This would mean one nurse may have one Primary Care PCP, but another nurse would have 2 Psych APRNs.
