  • 1.  Triage of non-established clients

    I am looking for guidance around nurses evaluating non-established clients who walk in for triage. I realize that we are bound by our State Board of Nursing but what protocols or workflows do you use for ambulatory services when the patient is not established and unable to get a new patient appointment for several weeks and have a medical complaint?

    We do not triage patients that have not been seen in the clinic at least 1 time.

    We triage to make sure the patient is stable and does not need emergent care. If it is not, then we try to get in with our clinic first, and if it is a ways out then will try one of our other clinics in the area to accommodate the patient. If it is a telephone triage, then we do not triage. Our ACCESS center nurses do that and determine if pt needs to go to ER, UC or clinic and get pt scheduled.
