  • 1.  use of LPNs and CMAs in OBGYN Clinics

    Wondering how ambulatory clinics without an RN perform NSTs in their OBGYN clinics. We currently only have LPNs and CMAs in our OBGYN clinics due to the shortage of RNs in inpatient units. How are your NSTs performed when application requires an assessment (Leopolds)? Do you allow with initial and annual skills competency and education? Our providers read the NSTs, there is no interpretation from clinical staff. Does anyone have a policy they are willing to share? There was a post from several months ago that I reached out to,  but the email was returned as "recipient unknown". Any information appreciated!

    I am also interested in this! Our practice has RNs who are pulled away from triage when a NST is needed and we are looking to see how other clinics are utilizing their LPNs for application. Providers perform the interpretation piece.

    We have been dealing with the same thing and what we have decided with input from our legal team is that the MA can place the patient on the NST (after validated competency by the provider). The provider does all of the interpretation and must be present in the clinic the entire time of the NST. The provider just sent me the process flow and i have sent to our staff development specialist to work up the competency which will have to be signed off by  the provider. What we were running into is that we have MAs in our OB/GYN practices that have far more experience than our new graduate RNs. Again we presented this to our legal team who has worked with us on process.

    Would you be willing to share the process flow and competency? Is it required for someone to be in the room with the patient during the twenty minute wait time?
