Use of Point of Care Ultrasounds- Renal Ultrasound

    Good afternoon,

Our Nephrology team is interested in beginning to use point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for renal imaging in the clinic. In Georgia, the RN scope of practice for POCUS is not specifically defined in the Nursing Practice Act; however, nurses may perform ultrasound procedures with appropriate training or certification. At our institution, nurses currently perform ultrasounds for PICC and IV placement, as well as bladder scans.

Do you have nurses who perform renal ultrasounds in your clinic? If so, would you be willing to share any training materials, competency requirements, or practice guidelines you use?

Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide.

    Sincerely,
