Agreed.
Teaching someone how to put on an ACE bandage or explaining what to call the office back for after a lac repair? In scope. Teaching someone how to care for their newly diagnosed diabetes or a complex wound? Out of scope.

Check out this document:
cmatoday-nd-2020-pa.pdf (aama-ntl.org)
The exact wording and guidance from AAMA is:
"Providing patient education, the content of which is approved by the provider, that does not require the exercise of clinical judgment" is generally considered in scope
At our organization, we consider it out of scope for a CMA to offer independent education to patients.

Subject: Adding Education
For the State of Texas, does anyone have any policies, procedures, knowledge regarding Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) adding education (not providing education) to a patients after visit summary (AVS)? In reviewing the CMA scope of practice, it seems it would be covered, but wanted to see if anyone had any additional information on this.
