  • 1.  Ambulatory annual competency on clia waived POCT

    Posted 04-08-2025 15:48

    Good Day Ambulatory Leaders,

I wanted to ask if any of you are performing annual competencies for CLIA Waived POCT tests?  I have come across various resources that mention proficiency testing isn't required but it could enhance accuracy of results. We are evaluating the number of annual competencies for our ambulatory clinical staff and trying to determine if POCT for experienced staff is required.

In our organization, we have created online versions of competency quizzes for our POC tests.  All staff that perform the testing are required to complete them annually.  We have over 100 waived clinics that perform waived testing so this is the most efficient way we have found to test and track staff understanding.

We also complete yearly competencies for our POC CLIA waived tests.  Most of them include a check off portion and a quiz, but some of our competencies are just a demonstration check off competency.

    Hello Karin,

Our organization has a lab team that manages training, competencies, and proficiency testing for our ambulatory sites that complete CLIA waived POC tests. I have attached the training plan and annual competency that my lab contact created as a reference.

    Thank you,

Do your organizations require all users of the the POCT to also show competency in the the quality control testing or do you leave the quality control testing to certain roles like lab staff?

    Thanks
