Hi Diane,
RNs and LPNs are compounding in some of our clinics. However, with the help of our pharmacists, the RNs and LPNs had to complete training and competency this last January as a Joint Commission requirement. We will provide annual training from now forward. Our MAs do not compound.

Subject: Compounding Lidocaine and Sodium Bicarb
Hi All,
In 2017 there was a thread that addressed nurses and medical assistants compounding lidocaine and overall the consensus was it was not recommended. I am following up to determine if that is still the practice given the changes in 2022 to USP 797 that allows for immediate use compounding where a delay in care could harm the patient. Are any of you compounding lidocaine with bicarbonate for use in dermatology, orthopedics or other clinics? If yes, who performs the compounding? RN, LPN, MA, paramedic? Thank you.
