    Hello Colleagues,

As we look to revamp our primary care float pool, I am looking to see what others have for a structure and the criteria required to remain active in the pool. Understanding we do not need holiday, weekend and night coverage as does our inpatient counterparts, is there certain expectations around minimum number of shifts per month or expectations for minimum high call volume days (i.e. Mondays or Fridays), and/or minimum requirements for high vacation request times (week between Christmas and New Years, school vacations in February and April, etc.). We are also looking at permanent 40 hour FTE floats vs. traditional per diem individuals and the impact one has had over the other.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you,

    M

I'm a new specialty clinic float nurse at Kaiser in Washington. Our per-diem float nurses are required to work 4 shifts per month and it sounds like they decide what days they can work. I'm a 0.8 fte and have been told that I do not have a routine day off every week, but that it will just be one of the 5 days. I agreed to this condition at time of hire and can only hope that I'll have some mondays and fridays, but can't count on it. There's no weekends as I'm only working in outpatient settings. I have heard that day off requests must come pretty far ahead of time in advance and that the holidays are tricky, but if I were to plan something a year a head of time, I would more likely get the time off request approved.

    That's all I know. I hope this helps :)

    Jenny
