How are IL Nurses handling telephone encounters for patients calling in from a different state for care advice?

This question has come up a lot in my practice as we have clinics in both Minnesota and Wisconsin,  but many of us are not dual licensed and Minnesotais not part of the Nursing Licensure Compact. Our phones are set up to send triage calls to the clinic the patient is seen at and a RN on-site will perform the triage assessment. However, if a patient is calling with a critical or "red flag" symptom, they will be transferred to the next available nurse for triage regardless of where they are. We were recently told by our legal team that we are allowed to triage and provide a disposition for urgent symptoms regardless of what state the patient is in. If the symptom is not urgent and the patient is out of state, we were directed to take the information about their symptoms and send it to their PCP for review and they would provide a disposition.

Thank you this is super helpful. We are also not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact Act as of yet, but are pending.
