Implementation of Shared Governance in Ambulatory sites

  • 1.  Implementation of Shared Governance in Ambulatory sites

    Posted 08-18-2022 14:06
    Hello,

We are actively trying to implement Shared Governance in our ambulatory care sites.  We have multiple clinics throughout our State.  I'm curious if anyone has successfully, or is attempting to implement Shared Governance in their ambulatory sites?  Would be interested to learn what works and what hasn't worked during that implementation process.

    Thank you!

Hi! I'm excited to say we have been on a roughly 4 year journey to grow our Ambulatory Shared Leadership structure for our ambulatory staff and have made great strides. Our healthcare system has a robust shared leadership model with 3 hospital campuses. Through partnership and advocacy we have gotten the system to recognize our ambulatory structure as a distinct "campus" with 2 way communication happening from our ambulatory councils up through our system SL. I would be happy to jump on a call sometime to go into more detail re: our structure, councils, participation, etc. Its a lot to put in a reply but is is something I feel very passionate about and is a core function of my role.

    Hello Brandy,
YES!  I would so enjoy hearing your journey with implementing Shared Governance at your location.  Motivation is also a key factor - especially maintaining that motivation throughout this process.  I am surprised that there isn't a Community for this topic.
Let's connect.  My email is: robin.pugh@ohiohealth.com.  Let me know days/times that are better for you and I can set up a meeting for us.
I appreciate your willingness to share.
    Thank you!

    Good morning Brandy-

This sounds like a great topic for a forum!  We are also struggling to implement a shared governance model for our entire organization and would be very interested in participating in forum call. Hoping the moderator of this forum from AAACN will help facilitate if you are willing to take the lead?

I am looking forward to hearing of your great work!

    Brandy,

I would love to be involved with a call to discuss how you implemented your Ambulatory Shared Leadership Structure. We are just starting to put ours together and we are trying to integrate with our inpatient Clinical Share Leadership groups. I would love details on how you are structured, interactions with the hospital campuses. How your clinics run unit and divisional meetings or however you have it structured. Also, what kind of participation you have had and some of the successful projects your ambulatory teams have worked through.

If there isn't a group call, is this something we could discuss when you have time?

We have a fairly successful shared governance structure. The inpatient side honestly took  a huge hit with COVID, but the ambulatory side seems to have recuperated nicely. I'm happy to be part of a call about this. I was not highly involved in the creation of the ambulatory side but can reach out to those people if you have specific questions!

I'm excited to hear there will be a call around this! I was involved in the implementation of a Shared Governance program within our academic hospital many years ago and am interested to see what it could look like on the ambulatory side.

I'd be interested to hear if those who have implemented it have a population specific program, a global program, or some sort of hybrid that mixes the two. We have many specialties within our organization, and we're working on trying to get smaller population specific groups together for shared problem solving. At this point I don't know that it's a nursing specific project (we have non-nursing/clinical Practice Managers and the staffing mix varies depending on the region) but  there would be some sort of clinical representation there. We figure if a women's clinic in one region is having an issue with something, a women's clinic two hours away is having a similar issue- let's make sure they're all at the table (even if it's a virtual table) to have open discussion and problem solving.

    Hi All,

I'm sorry I'm late to responding to this - my colleague and I actually created an Ambulatory Nursing Council several years ago at our former institution.  I've attached the abstract that we submitted for the AAACN conference in 2021- we were set to do a poster presentation but were ultimately unable to do so because of COVID.  I would be happy to share our learnings from this process with anyone interested.

    Thanks so much,
