  • 1.  Large Volume Paracentesis (LVP) in Primary Care Setting

    Posted 08-10-2025 19:10

    Hello All,

I'm looking for information about staffing models, best practices, etc. regarding Large Volume Paracentesis. (LVP)

Doing this in Primary Care versus Specialty Care.  Do you have RN, LPN, MA in the staffing model? Roles/responsibilities? Ratio of staff to patient. We are doing this in PC. I've done a literature review and could not find anything specific regarding nurse staffing for LVP.

Any information would be helpful, Thank you!

    Hi Ann,

Our Hepatology Specialty Clinic provides large volume paracentesis.  We do not have general IV access in our clinics.  If the patient is a high risk for volume shift and possible hypotension, the procedure is performed at our largest clinic that has an infusion center.  The patient is often prescheduled for an iv administration of albumin post procedure. Attached is a copy of our procedure for paracentesis.
