Good Afternoon,
Our Education department has been researching the LVN Scope of Service in the state of Texas regarding Mediport access/deaccess.
According Texas BON to 15.3 LVNs Engaging in Intravenous Therapy, Venipuncture or PICC lines, states it is out of the scope to insert or remove PICC/midline catheters. There is no mention of ports, or use of central lines for flushing or utilizing. Most of the information I found stated that it is up to facility policy or regulations. We are currently looking at our LVNs in the home health community.
I recently contacted the Texas BON and they agreed that there is no mention of these specifics and it may be more defined by Texas Health and Human Services and Texas Association of Home Care and Hospice. Again, I hit a wall on the specifics or any clear wording. I am asking if there are any health care facilities, ambulatory care, hospitals, or home health that may have a scope of service policy for LVNs that cover mediport and central line use. I understand it differs from state to state, but any information would be helpful to ensure we are compliant for the scope of service?
