Do any organizations allow their MAs to start IVs? Our Urgent Care Clinic is requesting that we allow their MAs to do this, and their leader states that she has worked in another organization that allows it. I am very uncomfortable with that but the states that we are in ((Wisconsin and Michigan) do not give any guidance for MA or other UAP scope of practice. I have looked at a number of scope of practice/scope of service documents posted in these forums and gathered from other areas and very few allow it. Does anyone have any input/insight on this topic? If you allow MAs to start IVs, can you explain the reasoning behind this?

    Thanks,

    Carrie Karcz

We do not allow MAs to start IVs.  In this case there are variances in what is allowed in differing states related to the MA scope of practice. I am in Washington State.

Not within the scope of an MA in the State of Ohio.  IV insertion are invasive procedures thus in Ohio MAs are generally not allowed to perform.

    Hi Carrie,

I was an Educator for ThedaCare and am now an Educator with Primary Care Associates of Appleton. Neither organization allows Insertion or removal or IVs.

One good resource is the AAMA. This opinion is on their site for Wyoming: http://www.aama-ntl.org/docs/default-source/legal/wi-duties-triage.pdf?sfvrsn=2

It does not include IV insertion, and teaching that skill is not included in MA curriculum in any schools I've seen.

I see one response in the thread from a colleague in Ohio, and there's a pretty strongly worded letter specifically regarding this question there as well. https://www.aama-ntl.org/docs/default-source/legal/oh-iv-opinion-letter-medboard.pdf?sfvrsn=2.

    Hello Carrie,

IV starts are not address in Medical Assistant school in MN, so we do not have MAs start IVs at our organization.

    Hope that helps!

When I was a Medical Assistant from 1987 to 2001, we were not taught or allowed to insert or remove IVs, however if the medical assistant was hired has a certified EMT and had there EMT-Intermediate, then the EMT-I can insert an IV.  It is a work around.  If you want to reach out to the University of Iowa based program e-mail: amy-haldeman@uiowa.edu or you can reach out to the local American Association or Medical Assistants for you state or ask the National AAMA.

We do not allow MAs to do anything with IVs, even if they are trained as EMTs or paramedics for other jobs. It is out of their scope as an MA or UAP. It can be frustrating for them when they have the skill, but would not be covered under the scope or our insurance
