Medical Assistants and Scope of Practice

    Hello all,

I'm a Nurse Education Development Specialist (new to the role) and was wondering what your organizations have in place for scope of practice for Medical Assistants in your ambulatory networks. We have a lot of gray areas here in Ohio. I was wondering if you could share any insight into any legislation and/or organization materials so I can see what is out there.

Hello Quiana! I would be happy to share the job description we came up with.  I will email it to you.  Its something we are still fine tuning.  We also have quite a few CCMAs in the mix since we have a local program.  Much different than the traditional CMA.  Unfortunately each state is different so I don't really know much about Ohios rules. Indiana is fairly non descript.

    Tomika,

Thank you for sharing. This helps a lot with the categorization in your document. It helps to identify many tasks that sometimes get left out when composing documents like this. Thanks again!

    Good morning Quiana,

I am an Ambulatory Nurse Clinician in Virginia. The scope of practice is very vague here. In private practice CMA/CCMA's work under the license of the provider. At my hospital the CMA/CCMA's are trained and supervised by the nurses. I will be happy to share our role delineation document with you via email.

    Hi Quiana

The Scope of Practice across the US is indeed very gray. Often times the board will leave certain things up to the organization to determine what is appropriate or not. I have attached the scope of practice for the MA that I developed for my Org. I am usually revising this if not annually, at least every 2 years as things arise. I am located in CA so your state will defer. Feel free to use as a guide.

    Good Luck

The reason the Scope of Practice for the cma remains blurred is because the Scope of Practice is (under all available state regulations) written for the "physician provider" to be responsible and accountable for the cma practice and competency.

Once the cma  position is relegated to the department of nursing, the role becomes that of an unlicensed assistive personnel. Nursing has to thendevelop a scope of practice for "that role" regardless of the cma certification.

    Hello Qiana,

First, welcome to ambulatory and education! Secondly, as others have mentioned, each state has their own interpretation of the COMAR regulations. Private practices usually do not tend to follow those regulations, but most governmentally regulated organizations do. You can search for your state's COMAR regs for MAs and review with your clinical director or legal to ensure you are all on the same page.

    Amy,

Thank you for the welcome! I think since there is so much uncertainty, I'm even more confused. As a former MA, I was not allowed to do half of the things they can do now. That leads to even more confusion because there is nothing solid anywhere. What I am trying to do is standardize according to my organizations needs since many different ambulatory clinics operate differently. I'm going to keep working at it.
