Hi All,
Just wanted to reach out and see if anyone is allowing RNs to administer OTC meds under their own license. We have not permitted but are interested in meds like EMLA/Lidocaine cream for use before starting an IV, etc.
The Ohio Board of Nursing allows RNs to administer or recommend the OTC med as an independent nursing action for a specific nursing problem or nursing diagnosis. An order from an authorized healthcare provider is not required as the RN is licensed to engage in nursing practice. If the nurse is administering the medication in accordance with an authorized healthcare provider's regimen, then a provider order is needed.
Please let me know your practices. Thanks, Maureen
