We do not extend our Rapid Response services to our clinics. Instead, Rapid Responses can only be called on patients who are admitted to the hospital. I believe this decision had to do with the availability of order sets in the EHR. Even those who are wrist-banded for a procedure or infusion in an outpatient area are not eligible. Instead, for any patient who is not admitted (whether in an outpatient area of the hospital building, a clinic within the hospital building, or a clinic at an offsite office building), we have different policies in place. Offsite office buildings must call 911 and outpatient areas or clinics within the main hospital building call a code blue, even if the patient could be better served by a Rapid Response. I believe there was also some liability involved in these decisions.
