  • 1.  RN-Led Prenatal Intake in OB

    Posted 30 days ago

    Hi,

In our obstetrics clinics, RNs currently conduct prenatal phone calls ahead of a patient's first visit with their physician. During these calls, they complete a risk assessment, gather medical history, and provide general patient education. I'm interested in benchmarking to see whether other organizations follow a similar process.

    Thanks,

    Hi Tiffany!

Our organization also has nurses perform prenatal intake calls prior to the initial clinician visit. The patients are provided a link to an educational video and an online questionnaire that gathers health history etc. Within the general prenatal education video there is a link to a longer video that goes into more detail about the NIPT, carrier screening, etc. The call itself is usually performed by an LPN who is assigned by an RN to follow our org's protocol. Now that we use the video the visit is a bit more data gathering than education. If there are any concerning symptoms or questions that were not covered by the video, the LPN will escalate to an RN.
What kind of a risk assessment does your org complete?

    Hi Tiffany,

I work at an FQHC, where we do family medicine in addition to OB care.  We do a similar process to what you listed. The one difference I noted is that is that out RNs also see patients the day of their initial visit to complete POCT and screeners, as well as provide the education and resources.

Hi! We have a centralized telephone nurse triage for most ambulatory service lines that started navigation services for long lead time new patients in endocrinology. Their duties are similar to the list provided in this thread, pertaining to previsit. They now see approximately 20% of all new pts and those nurse navigated visits have higher show rate than those without. They are also able to expedite appointments based on a predetermined list (low volume). We are working on scaling the service to other specialties. If anyone has other metrics measured, let's connect!
