  • 1.  Shared Governance or Performance Improvement Committee in Outpatient Setting

    Posted 09-27-2022 13:20
    Hello everyone,

I am starting work on a project to implement a shared governance or performance improvement committee (PIC) in a primary care outpatient clinic setting. We have several outpatient primary care clinics and the way that I am envisioning it is having each outpatient clinic have their own shared governance or PIC that would then report up into a larger shared governance body for the several outpatient clinics. I am wondering if anyone has implemented or in place a similar situation and if there is any advice or guidance you can provide. It is a little different than an inpatient shared governance since we are stand alone clinics with different issues than inpatient staff.

Thank you for any and all help!

    Hello Trinity,

Thank you for sharing your Shared Governance implementation journey.  You are not alone with this Shared Governance discussion.  I'm not sure if you were able to attend the Discussion that was hosted on AAACN last Tuesday, the 20th.  If not, there is a recording link provided:  The recording and chat session for this Community Live call are now filed in the Open Forum Library/ Community Live/Shared Governance folder. [community.aaacn.org]
Here we discussed similar issues with the implementation of Shared Governance.  I heard varied approaches to how Ambulatory Settings were implementing Shared Governance.  Overall, I'm hearing that much depends on your setting - how it is structured, etc..
We are implementing Shared Governance similar to the way you are describing it being implemented at your setting.  We have focused on Service Line alignment, getting associates to first meet within their offices/clinics, then at a larger subcommittee specific to their service lines, and then to the overall Shared Governance group for the entire Ambulatory system.
Perhaps we may want to meet again and break down some of this implementation stages to discuss steps more in-depth?  Food for thought.
Always happy to discuss this further with you, if you are interested.

Thank you for sharing the link to the previous discussion, Robin. I watched it and feel like I am on the right track with my vision of how it would look. I am reading articles and bought a couple of books on shared governance to help me as well. I would love to have another discussion about shared governance in the ambulatory setting.

Nice work, Trinity!  I look at Shared Governance as a model, but it's a model that I think can be modified to your setting/situation.  You can still keep the basic concepts, just learn how to implement it based on your practice setting.
We can definitely look into getting together again in the near future to further discuss this topic.
    Thank you~
