  • 1.  Staff to provider ratio - benchmarking needed

    I'm looking for information on provider to staff ratio based on monthly provider visits. Where can I find benchmarking for this? Our clinic currently utilizes RNs, LPNs, CMAs, and MAs but I'm looking into how these roles and skill levels are distributed throughout the ambulatory offices. I appreciate any information you can share with me.

    Hello,
    One way that you might approach this question is to determine the average length of time it takes to complete your rooming activities for visits.  In our system we allot around 20 minutes for rooming activities, thus one staff member could room 3 patients/hour.  You could then extrapolate the number of staff based on your number of visits per provider and clinic.  Of course in addition to rooming there are other tasks that staff need to perform such as immunizations, education, etc.  You would need to account for that work as well.

    If you interested in benchmarking check out the Nurse Sensitive Indicator Networking Community on this/AAACN site. One of our NSI team members did a comprehensive presentation regarding benchmarking 04/20/22. Also, stay tuned for publication in The View July/August: It is all about various avenues for benchmarking.

    I think it's essential to remember what really matters is the population of patients that we serve. What are their needs? What are their gaps in care? What guidelines/evidence support our practice? What works for one organization/team may not work well for another. So, benchmarking "quantitative" isn't always helpful and if we aren't careful, could be an avenue that hinders instead of supports us. We need to start measuring the qualitative aspects of our practice and the various (and very different) populations of patients that we serve.
