The Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on Thursday July 31 to discuss and "mark-up" the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill, which includes Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs and the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR). This bill provides funding for nursing education, loan repayment and workforce development, as well as funding for nursing research. These programs were "zeroed out" in the President's Budget submitted to Congress earlier this year.
Talking points include:
- State the need for funding to support the nursing profession, as this is essentially the only bill that supports funding for nursing workforce development.
- Emphasize how these programs support pathway models as well as funding to enhance the nursing workforce (provide a personal example if you received assistance such as loan repayment or scholarships)
- Stress to them that we need investments in nursing now, as we already have a shortage and it is only going to worsen as our population ages!
- Also be sure to remind your Senator to vote for Reauthorization of Title VIII under the Public Health Service Act.
Please consider reaching out to your Senator before Thursday- If your senator is on the Senate Appropriations Committee (see list below), it is very important to reach out to them ,as they will be making the decisions about what is in this bill as well as moving it forward to the full Senate for consideration.
