TJC leaves that decision to the organization to determine, and during a survey will evaluate if you've established an organizational plan for competency validation and whether or not you're following your plan. Here is a link to an FAQ about orientation and competency assessments from TJC. https://www.jointcommission.org/standards/standard-faqs/office-based-surgery/human-resources-hr/000002152/
"While The Joint Commission does not define required competencies that must be completed, when determining competency requirements, consideration should be given to needs of its patient population, the types of procedures conducted, conditions or diseases treated, and the kinds of equipment it uses. Competency assessment then focuses on specific knowledge, technical skills, and abilities required to deliver safe, quality care."
One approach for determining frequency of skills/competency validation is to identify complicated, high risk, low-frequency, and/or error-prone skills that your staff perform, and validate those on a recurring basis. Especially in procedural areas.
