  • 1.  ALSPALS Requirements in Ambulatory Clinics

    Posted 05-16-2024 16:13

Do you require any of the staff who work in your clinics to be ALS or PALS certified?

If you do, which clinics do you require it in and why?

If the clinics have a crash cart is that a deciding factor for ALS or PALS certification?

    What about Oncology Infusion Units?

Thank you in advance for your responses?

    Ceresa,

Hello, my name is Veronica, I am a nurse manager for an outpatient ambulatory clinic. Our facility requires only a BLS for the ambulatory clinic, I have repeatedly asked if the ambulatory RN staff should be ACLS/PALS certified due to the RNs triaging our Walkin patients and that we have a crash cart on our unit. Luckily most of the RNs have obtained their certifications which makes me feel at ease. I would also like to know what the requirements are of other facilities.

Funny you should bring this up.  I was just asking about this yesterday as we don't have anyone ACLS certified.  They states "it's only required to have BLS".  The clinic is mostly made up of MAs and 4 RNs.  I'm the walk-in nurse and I was ACLS certified in the past, but I had let it lapse, so I would have to pay to get the certification.  I do believe we need this certification.

ACLS AND PALS both require providers to be able to lead an ACLS or PALS emergent situation. RN's may not initiate either independently. Given the infrequency of such events in ambulatory care, having strong BLS/AED proficient Nursing staff is best practice.

Nurses who work in procedures are required to obtain ACLS. PALS is not generally needed, but PEARS might be a more appropriate course for areas that see pediatric patients. As of now a majority of our staff have BLS, including phlebotomists, RNs in community clinics, MAs, LVNs. Clinics are also expected to complete 2 mock codes in the clinic with all staff, each year.
