    Good afternoon!

We are in the process of preparing a general learning needs assessment for our RN staff and are interested in seeing how other ambulatory educators have done this in their clinical settings. Wondering if someone would be willing to share what they have developed as we start the work on ours.

Thank you! Your expertise and insights are appreciated!

We do an annual House-wide assessment for RNs. We typically use Microsoft Forms. One of the first questions includes where you work which allows us to sort the responses by area. We ask things like what topics they need, skills, how they like to receive education, etc. If sending to a large group try to limit open-ended questions. They're not fun to sort through!
We also round to elicit real-time feedback and assess needs that way. And look at incident reports, etc. to see where there are gaps.
I took the RN assessment and created a similar one for MAs. Also done via Forms. My MA response rate was stellar! Not so much the RNs...

    Dan,

I would love to learn more about your Learning Needs Assessment. I am fairly new to my role as an NPD practitioner and have been working on developing this very tool to use with the practices I support. Any information you can provide would be much appreciated!

    Best Wishes!

    Hello all!

I am glad that this question about a learning needs assessment sparked interest! I did some learning about this and spoke with other education leaders. My team and I came up with 7 questions that fit the needs of our ambulatory clinics at this time. We chose questions and answers that will allow for easier data analysis and kept in mind what we, as the education team, can offer at this time.

    Take care!
    Jana

Hopefully this will help get your wheels spinning:

What department are you working in?
What is your preferred method of learning?
What is the best way to communicate about educational needs and opportunities?
If you have been unable to attend educational opportunities in the past, what has prevented you from attending?
Choose 5 education topics from the list below that you would like more education or training on
Are you interested in becoming certified in a specialty in the next year?
Are you interested in nurse mentorship/preceptorship programs?

    Hi Julie,

We included things like emergency response, disease management, instrument and scope cleaning/handling, Infection prevention, Medication management, phlebotomy/IV skills. You can certainly list any that are specific to your clinics. We also included some team building topics like communication and teamwork and unit-based quality improvement.

    Hope this helps.
