  • 1.  Annual Skills Competencies

    Do you all complete Annual Skills Competencies for your clinics (MA and RN)? If yes, what format do you do this in? How much time do you take? How many staff do you have assist with sign off's? Any input is appreciated.

    Each department does their own competencies for unique procedures. In addition staff attends a Skills Day which is run by nursing education that addresses signing off shared competancies. My area is part of a hospital based ambulatory wound care clinic. Many of the skills day topics are not relevant to our jobs. RNs and techs participate. Skills day is offered twice a year, over a couple of days

    It has been a struggle addressing the unique needs of ambulatory staff. We have just gotten nurse educators assigned to each department last year.

    Our clinic settings use the Donna Wright model. As a result, we no longer offer skills days. Instead, relevant competencies are chosen by each team and are typically validated as they arise during the employees' regular work.

    Does your organization do initial skills competencies?  

    Can anyone provide information regarding their process when a currently working employee can not pass a basic skills competency such as vital signs or medication administration?

    We do initial "competency" with new hires and "skills day" annually. If staff has any issue at either of those times (or identifed anytime during their employment), the managers place a training request with the education team. We evaluate the need, and deploy the appropriate trainer to work with the staff member. Feedback is given to supervisor and escalated prn. All is documented within the staff member's e-file that Education keeps.

    Yes we currently do a bi monthly skills competencies on a regional basis (two clinics) across our system (8 clinics) using a competency checklist that our Regional Nurse Managers/Nursing Supervisors and Program Supervisors (MA) and Lead MA's have reviewed together and received competencies by our Nurse Development Consultant.
    We typically use a powerpoint (google slides) and then a sign off that we use during our group skills check off that is conducted in small group sessions.
    The reason we went to this model is that the size of nursing/MA staff ranges from 10-42 and we only have 90 minutes maximum. We have mapped out a years worth of competencies to cover ie. VS, ECG, nebulizer, etc. 
    I am attaching an example of a powerpoint and competencies.
    We then scan in the completed competencies to the shared drive and the information is entered to the shared employee spreadsheet to keep track of who has completed the training.
