  • 1.  Initial vs follow up visit for new patients post d/c from hospital

    Posted 9 days ago

Question--- if a patient was seen by a consulting physician at hospital, what visit type is used for first office visit? Is it a follow up visit or initial visit. CMS guidelines indicate that a patient cannot be billed for initial if seen by provider or peer from the clinic in the last 3 years.

Hi Melissa!  Some of our providers see as a Follow Up while others as a ED Follow Up.  The visit type doesn't necessarily drive how the appt is billed but the length of the visit. Hope this helps!

Hi! If a patient would like to establish care with one of our providers, we schedule a follow-up visit for non-Medicare payors and a TCM visit for Medicare payors. Following that visit, the patient is then scheduled for a new patient appointment.
