Dear Team,
I am looking into developing an initial and continuing education plan for our medical interpreters. I am looking for ideas on how to ensure competency in these individuals as I am not fluent in any language besides English.
During a recent audit, we learned that one of our interpreters did not accurately interpret a patient's medication regimen to both the CMA and later the Provider and are hoping to rectify this with a better competency and education program. Currently, we have a bilingual exam and an interpreter exam that they take prior to hire. There is no ongoing assessment, after their initial training with a seasoned interpreter who tells us when they think that person is ready to interpret on their own....
We are looking the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters as one option.. due to us being an FQHC, I am not sure we as an organization can afford that program...
Any recommendations on this is appreciated.
