  • 1.  LVN scope: Local anesthetic injection in Ambulatory Dermatology

    Posted 10-02-2023 13:28

In your ambulatory care setting does LVNs perform local anesthetic injections prior to a procedure? We're looking to make improve workflow efficiency and wanted to see if the clinic LVN can inject anesthetic in a Dermatology clinic (Texas) after the Provider has marked the site?

We allow our LPNs and CMAs to perform intradermal injections using lidocaine with a provider order and after validation and confirmed competency. We also validate our Dermatology clinical staff on an annual basis for intradermal injections specifically.

Keep in mind the administration of any anesthetic by the cma is restricted by the Borad of Medicine in many states.

Agreed! We have argued this many ways in our organization and we keep going back to intent. The intention is to prevent CMAs from administering anesthesia gasses or anesthesia through IVs that could result in death or grave harm. The intent with lidocaine, administered intradermally, is use as a local numbing agent. Our legal department was involved in this decision.
