  • 1.  Methotrexate in non-oncology setting

    Posted 10-09-2024 14:23

We are looking at administering Methotrexate in our OB ambulatory clinics for ectopic pregnancies.

Looking to see there are other organizations that allows this?  If yes, would you be willing to share how you implemented?

    Thanks in advance

We provide this service for our OB patients in the outpatient setting. Happy to email you our process so it doesn't jam up replies.

Hi! Can I see your process as well? In 2 years, do you have the nurses do a refresher?

We administer a lot of chemotherapy and biotherapy in the non-oncology setting.  There is a course through ONS that is focused on the administration of chemotherapy to the non-oncology patient setting.  This course has a provider card associated with it, it is good for two years, then there is a refresher course.  The course is all on line.  We provide a bridge to practice by having staff practice the administration and understand the patient populations and disease processes that they serve.

    hi Ann!

are you referencing the ONS Fundamentals class? Do you by chance have urology RNs administer BCG via bladder instillation? did you have them attend this course or not knowing this is an antineoplastic vs actual chemotherapy drug? we currently have BCG instillations in the ambulatory urology setting, and we're working towards determining if we want to continue internal education and training or if there is value moving towards this ONS course. if this is similar to what you've experienced, what are your thoughts on this?

do you have ambulatory RNs administering BCG and actual chemotherapy meds such as docetaxel or gemcitabine? if so, did you have them attend the fundamentals or advanced course? or do you think when administering only one route (such as bladder instillation), the advanced course is unnecessary?

thank you for your feedback! feel free to respond here or directly via email at carrie.lemke@aah.org

If I could add on another question for those that have replied or allow this in your clinics.

Who prepares the Methotrexate for injections?  Is it pharmacy or do you allow your nurses to do this.  One of our locations is not on site for pharmacy to draw up the medication.

    Thanks in advance -

    Amy
