    Posted 12-14-2022 12:29

Hello all, I'm in the market for ANY Nurse driven protocols or guidelines. I'm finally getting some traction at my organization to encourage and endorse RNs working to the top of their licensure. I currently have in place protocols & algorithms for prescribing for UTI and Conjunctivitis. I would like to venture into the arena of adjusting medications based on lab results and s/s for disease processes such as HTN, CHF, DM, hyperlipidemia and Coumadin clinics/ INR management. I would be grateful for any and all information and thoughts anyone is willing to share. Thank you kindly.

    Tracy,

I'm working on a similar issue. Did you ever get any examples or perhaps you may have developed some since the original post.

    Hi Tracy-

Happy to assist as we have many of the nurse protocols you are inquiring about.

Caution related to your language of nurses prescribing- out of scope.

If your protocol is set up properly with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria for medication adjustment, it could be signed "per protocol, co-sign required" or whatever similar language is in your EMR. We use epic.

There is a great discussion in the NSI SIG going on about nurse driven protocols for Hypertension. We just had an open call about this topic as well. The recording is posted and @Jennifer Stranix might be able to help guide you to it if that would be helpful!

I'm working on nurse protocols for MFM patients right now and spoke at the open call about it, if that is of interest as well!

Would love to participate in this conversation. In New York State, we have a very hard time with protocols, very strict. However, there is new legislation, and it looks like we will be able to initiate more disease specific protocols by algorithm, not considered prescribing. Does anyone use protocols for medical assistance to order an EKG or urine analysis for routine visits?
