    Hello Everyone,

Is anyone including Pulse oximetry as a part of their standard vital signs?

    Hello Janette,

I have seen Pulse Oximetry included as a 5th vital sign in many ambulatory care clinics. I also looked up Joint Commission guidance and "checking pulse oximetry doesn't require a provider's order and the use of pulse oximetry on a PRN basis may be viewed as a part of vital signs."  The standards state that "A therapist or nurse can use their clinical judgment to do an occasional pulse oximetry reading."  Pulse Oximetry - Order by Physician/Licensed Practitioner | Home Care | Provision of Care Treatment and Services PC | The Joint Commission

    Thanks,

yes we do except in our peds clinic we do not do it 100% of the time.  We typically will only do that if its a respiratory issue.

We use pulse oximetry now, but with the recent discovery of the racial bias of pulse oximetry I expect there to be more conversation coming soon.  If you haven't seen this study, Racial Bias in Pulse Oximetry Measurement | NEJM
