  • 1.  Exam room stocking best practices

    Posted 12-20-2024 09:39

It's hard for me to fathom, but I am seeing a need to teach some basic practices when stocking exam rooms.

Things like rotating older stock to the front when restocking, keeping items that expire at the same time together, not overstocking, keeping only frequently used items in the exam rooms, etc. do not seem to be as widely understood as I believed.

I'm thinking about developing a tip sheet, but wondering if anyone has already done work like this that they might be willing to share. If not, I will certainly share my own once it is completed.

Hi Scott, you are not alone. We have a room set-up job aid to ensure each exam room is standardized. The MA is responsible for stocking their room at the end of the day. Our providers/MA are not guaranteed to be in the same room the following day so this is a courtesy that everyone is encouraged to follow. I will email it to you.

I'm happy to share our document. We purchased plastic drawer/cabinet bins of various sizes for each exam room and they are clearly labeled. Our MA's take great pride in keeping everything organized. We have a "nurse server" cart that moves room to room for restocking, this has saved them significant time - they no longer have to make lists and go back and forth to the main supply area. One of our most important goals was to prevent overstocking. Our pediatric exam room's are adjusted accordingly.
