Dear Team Members,

  I am an Clinical Training Specialist for my organization.  We are located in Iowa, and the scope of a CMA is very vague.  I received a request to develop a competency for foley catheter insertion and removal. 

My initial reaction to this is that Certified Medical Assistants should not be performing this invasive procedure.

My second reaction is that maybe not even LPNs.

My third reaction, is to only have RN's performing this task... 

Has anyone been through this task of figuring out who can do this?  My second question, is: is this something we usually see in an ambulatory care FP setting?

In California MAs may not insert foley catheters and it is within the scope of an LVN and RN.

The California Medical Board regulates MA practice here and it has been challenging to get clear answers.  The LVN and RN boards are much more responsive to scope questions.

Hi Bonnie!

I'm at Sanford Health and I've included a screenshot from our guideline that is based on Scope of Practice, pertaining to urinary catheterization. This is an Enterprise-wide guideline which serves Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. It's probably self explanatory but the "N" means they cannot perform the task. I hope this helps!
